Concussion

Concussion is the sudden but short-lived loss of mental function that occurs after a blow or other injury to the head. It is the most common but least serious type of brain injury.

Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include:

  • headache or a feeling of pressure in the head

  • temporary loss of consciousness

  • confusion or feeling as if in a fog

  • amnesia surrounding the traumatic event

  • dizziness or "seeing stars"

  • ringing in the ears

  • nausea

  • vomiting

  • slurred speech

  • delayed response to questions

  • appearing dazed

  • fatigue

A person with a single, isolated concussion generally has a very good recovery outcome with few long-term effects.
