Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation, or swelling, of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, sinuses are filled with air. But when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) can grow and cause an infection.

Symptoms of sinusitis include:

​

• A green or yellow discharge from your nose

• A blocked nose

• Pain and tenderness around your cheeks, eyes or forehead

• A sinus headache

• A high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or more

• Toothache

• A reduced sense of smell

• Bad breath (halitosis)

   

Sinusitis usually occurs after an upper respiratory tract infection, such as a cold. If you have a persistent cold and develop the symptoms above, you may have sinusitis.
